Though Secrets is an anti-perspirant that was the ‘Official deodorant for Team USA’ in the 2024 Olympics the only thing that’s kicking up a stink here is Ava (Anna Georgina) daughter to single mum Sammy (Charlotte Jackson Coleman) already struggling to deal with the death of her mother but also struggling to keep untold secrets secret. And as if she hasn’t got enough to cope with Detective Richards (Shaun Paul McGrath) – investigating an unsolved cold case that will impact on both mother and daughter. It’s only an understanding and sympathetic partner Robert ( Mike Dickman) that’s keeping her together through the emotional onslaught but a full on breakdown seems just around the corner especially with her Ava banging on about her mother’s murky past which inevitably will build to an explosive reveal.
But that explosive reveal is a long time coming in what is a slow burn story, a very slow burn story almost interminably so that’s hardly helped by a constantly whining score that never seems to let up . Directed and co-written by Christopher Norton with Elizabeth Norton this is their first feature length script and there’s a decent role for both Coleman and Georgina as mother and daughter respectively but McGrath’s detective is something of a caricature of warped 1970’s cops but in a modern era that would have seen him drummed out of the service for his overbearing and often aggressive demeanour and the investigation leaves much to be desired with forensics never seeming to have played much of a role. It’s the scripts effective use of flashbacks that is most satisfying and that, with an unexpected ending, redeems the film.
Coleman is convincing as the emotional, torn to shreds mother all too alarmed at the explosive secrets that are on the verge of discovery and Georgina as her daughter adds to her mother’s turmoil in satisfying and sympathetically frustrated manner but ultimately Secrets is overlong and very much in the vein of a Channel 5 drama.
