Since the news that Netflix refused to renew their contract with Meghan Markle it is rumoured that Netflix security have been put on high alert to keep an eye out for the race baiting jam seller hanging around their office entrance trying to hijack any executive but When Evil Lurks is not that film. But it’s certainly as horrific. An Argentinian film it sees a pair of brothers Pedro ( Ezequiel Rodriguez) and Jimmy (Demian Salomon) tooled up with firearms to visit an isolated farmhouse in the middle of the night. What they stumble across on the way there suggests that all is far from well as they soon discover when they find what the film calls a, ‘rotten’ – a person who is barely alive, bloated and decomposing and it’s a certainty that things will only get worse from hereon.
Writer–director Demien Rugna script ratchets up the gnarly horror with its story of a demon that can possess both humans and animals and likely to possess the village, city, country if not dealt with correctly and will easily possess those that don’t. Those rules include not using electrical lights, staying away from anything that a ‘rotten’ has touched and never name the evil by its name whether it be Beelzebub, Azrael or Meghan. And definitely steer clear of animals because here is a film that’s has no qualms about utilizing both animals and children who are as much at risk as anyone else and there are at least two moments in this that will have audiences gasping with shock.
It’s an excellent first half that sets up the premise and then goes to gore filled extremes as the brothers attempt to engage the services of a ‘cleaner’ (Silvina Sabater) who knows how to deal with the turmoil the pair have caused after a catastrophically daft decision when they dealt with a ‘rotten’. It’s the latter half of the film that falters slightly but that aside When Evil Lurks has some truly brutal, traumatizing and unforgettable moments that makes this one of the best foreign language horror films in quite some time.
