News of a Crimson Tide sequel

The 1995 submarine thriller ‘Crimson Tide starring Gene Hackman & Denzel Washington earned a healthy $157m at the box officer. Now, thirty years later there’s news of a Crimson Tide sequel according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

“We have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what’s going on under the water,” Bruckheimer teased, without naming said filmmakers.

Quite who would be in it remains unknown. Gene Hackman and director Tony Scott have passed away and its only Denzel Washington left of the three mainstays of the original film. Neither of those actors were fist choice either with Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Pitt all rumoured to star at the time. Whether Washington will return is wholly script-dependent and there’s no finished screenplay yet. But “If we give him a good script, I think he’d do it,” Bruckheimer said.

“We had Tony Scott, a phenomenal director,” Bruckheimer said. “We had Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne, two of the greatest writers and directors, writing on that movie. … I don’t know if I’ll ever replicate that kind of writing for a film.” In fairness Tarantino’s script polishes were obvious ( they were the Silver Surfer speeches!)
