Fantastic Four – First Steps – REVIEW

movie flex

This is the third incarnation we’ve had of the Fantastic Four and this overhaul sees its secondary title of ‘First Steps’ take a step in the right direction. Mercifully, much like the recent Superman, this is no origin story with a brief whistle stop explanation as to  how Dr Reed Richards aka Mr Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn)  and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) have gained their superpowers and have becomes the worlds go-to saviours when it comes to intergalactic menaces.

It’s a masterstroke setting this latest incarnation in a retro futuristic  1960’s New York where the four are living as a kind of fantastic family – Reed and Sue are married with a baby on the way, and Sue’s brother Johnny along with Ben Grimm live with them as kind of surrogate sons in their state of the art deco style apartment. But their superpowers are soon to be drawn on with the arrival of Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his appetite for planets with Earth next on the menu unless, that is, the Four succumb to his demand that will save the planet. It’s a price that they refuse only for the world’s population to turn against them. So what can they do to save the world, their own reputation and defeat Galactus?

After the previous incarnations of the original superhero family that has popped up at ten year intervals starting in 2005 and Marvel have got it right. The casting is spot on and the addition of a baby whose parents have the power of elasticity and invisibility surely means  that the child is now an invisible rubber (and possibly the lack of which that bought about the child’s conception) but  it all makes an interesting addition for future films. The always excellent Ralph Ineson voices Galactus, a really great villain and is aided by a female Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) might have diehard fans up in arms. And upping the light comedy is the foursome’s household robot H.E.R.B.I.E. a kind of R2-D2 via Temu.

After a decidedly bumpy few years for Marvel films Fantastic Four First Steps is a terrific return to form with a lightness of touch to balance out the wonder and spectacle  …..and do stick around for the mid credit sequence!
