Bring Her Back – REVIEW

movie flex

2022’s ‘Talk To Me’ from Australian  brothers Danny & Michael Philippou made quite the impact and their horror film debut earned an impressive $91m. Their follow up ‘Bring her back’ will please fans too and ups the ante significantly when it comes to unsettling audiences right from the start with some disturbing home video footage of some sort of ritual abuse.

But that abuse of a person continues with Piper (Sora Wong), a visually impaired schoolgirl keen to make friends with other girls in her year but who turn out to be the mean girls poking fun at her disability. Things are about to get worse when she and her older brother Andy (Billy Barratt) find their father dead in the bathroom and having to be taken into care by Laura (Sally Hawkins) a former social worker who already has a foster child Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips) who is highly unstable. Shaven headed and mute he stares blank faced into middle distance  reminiscent of Brooklyn Beckham having been asked, ‘What do you do for a living?’ Right from the very start it is clear that Laura is not quite right either but quite what it is she’s hiding remains a mystery for much of the film which little by little suggest that Piper and Billy are in some sort of imminent and extreme danger.

All four actors are very good but its Hawkins who really unsettles in a motherly role that as far removed from the mother she played in the Paddington films. As the story unfolds there are a number of wince inducing, look away from the screen moments that vie with ‘Cookery with Meghan Markle’ – both of which turn heads as well as stomachs. Bring her Back is an often uncomfortable watch but it marks the Philippou brothers as talent to watch in the horror genre.
