May the 4th was the day that Margaret Thatcher became the British prime minister in 1979 when she swept to victory in the General Election of that year staying in power as leader for 13 years. Reviled by the far left it’s little wonder that the date did not become National  Margaret Thatcher day despite a famous advert celebrating her election. The exact origin of How May the 4th became Star Wars day is not specifically known. Something of a dad joke among fans is started to gain traction when it was shared on social media through a series of often very funny memes.

As it continued through the years with no sign of abating business began to get in on the act with their own ads and nods to the date with campaigns by Jameson whiskey and Nissan and by 2012 when Disney bought the right to the franchise from Lucasfilm the company quickly latched on to its promotional potential and began running events and even specific branding bearing the legend, ‘May the 4th be with you’. Ever since Disney has marked the day with the launch of new Star Wars merchandise, ranging from lightsabre sets to jewellery.

There’s even a small town in Pennsylvania that called itself New Hope in a nod to the first film with its population of almost 300 dressing uMay the 4thp as characters from the film on May the 4th.

But for some fans, the official Star Wars Day comes will always be 25th May, the date of the first film’s release. The Los Angeles City Council even declared the date to be Star Wars Day in 2007, although the California Legislature voted in 2019 to designate May the 4th as Star Wars Day.
