The Accountant 2 – REVIEW

movie flex

Taking the unlikely premise of accountant by day, kick ass crime fighter at night (or indeed any other time of day)  we now have  The Accountant 2 sequel to the moderate 2016 hit film with Christian Wolff ( Ben Affleck) still living in his Airstream trailer home and soon to find himself drawn into another chapter of chaotic action.

A decent opening scene sees JK Simmons now a private investigator looking into the disappearance of a family of three that sees him waiting to meet up with Anais ( Daniela Pineda) in a dodgy bar that culminates in toilet turmoil as he fights, not for a  cubicle where the lock works, but for his life against a pair of armed men that sees him taken out by a sniper. It’s at the morgue where a government agent Marybeth Median (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) sees the legend ‘ Find the accountant’ scrawled in biro on Simmons forearm. It can only refer to Wolff who she has been after for years

This sequel plays for more laughs than the first film with Wolff at a speed dating event having manipulated the algorithm in his favour to find a queue of women wanting to meet him but his neuro-divergent behaviour means he doesn’t know how to talk to women. But straining credulity further sees Wollf’s ability to link events and detail that assists Median with the pair teaming up and joined by Wolff’s brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal). It’s the brother combo at the centre of this that’s the real appeal – their brotherly banter with Christians’ brains and Braxton’s brawn making a lethal combo. The scenes where the pair antagonise each other are the real highlights as the action scenes are generic and in an era of John Wick and Gareth Evans actioners the bar has been set high and on that level The Accountant 2 never really satisfies especially coupled with muddled plotting that takes in child trafficking, illegal immigration and a mysterious female assassin along with a poorly defined villain.

There are enjoyable moments of daftness – a hub of teen autistic savants locating a witness’ phone photos, the explanation of a head injured hospital patient acquiring leftfield skills that seems inspired by Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Lisbeth Salander and Wolff pinning down the detail in a Pizza business owners accounts – but the real fun here is the brothers bromance.
