With ten film top date that have earned in excess of $1billion worldwide the Saw films have been a horror staple over the past twenty years and Saw X (2023) gave the franchise a boost earning $112m off a modest budget. So a sequel was quickly greenlit but with the quick turnaround that these films have fans are asking, ‘What’s happened to Saw XI?’
Scheduled to open on 26th Sept. 2025its now been pulled from the release schedule and instead we will now get ‘The Strangers – Chapter 2,” ‘ the second part of an intended new trilogy that started with the original film back in 2008.
Franchise veteran Kevin Greutert was on board to direct Saw XI but since then the film’s screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan recently revealed that “zero progress” had been made since they turned in a draft in the spring of 2024.
Lionsgate who release the films have u=issued a statement purportedly from Billy the ventriloquist doll saying, ‘“I’ve seen the rumors. They say it’s Game Over,” You all should know me better than that. The game is never over.”
There had been reports of ‘inter-squabbling’ between the producers and Lionsgate. According to screenwriter Patrick Melton, the project was “stalled at a managerial level,” with the hurdle having “nothing to do with the creative.” adding, ‘Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that.” He likened the topicality to that of Saw VI, which focused on Jigsaw getting revenge on health insurance executives, with that theme gaining renewed relevance recently after the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
