The story behind the stop motion Jabba the Hut in Star Wars (1977)

The difference between the original release of Star Wars in 1977 and its all new re-imagined, polished  and CGI enhanced 1997 re-release is stark for many of the die hard fans. From whether Grebo pulls his gun first on Han Solo in the cantina to the storm troopers riding giant lizards on Tatooine

But perhaps the one change that is most notable is that of Jabba the Hut. The 1977 version saw him played by Declan Mulholland but by the time of the release of Return of the Jedi we had an enormous slug like puppet that we know and ‘love’ today. By the time of the 1997 re-releases and the advance in CGI Mulholland was replaced but there were rumours that originally Mulholland was merely a placeholder for a stop motion version.

To get to the bottom of it all we spoke to stop motion genius Phil Tippett who worked on the film (that chess game between C-3PO and Chewbacca is his) and we asked him about the stop motion Jabba.
