In the Lost Lands – REVIEW

movie flex

From author George R R Martin is this adaptation of his short story ‘In the Lost Lands’ that director Paul W S Anderson helms a big screen version collaborating again with his wife Milla Jovovich for the first time  since 2020’s ‘Monster Hunter’ and the pair are joined  by Dave Bautista.  Jovovich is Gray Alys a witch with a face tattoo, the sort which you have after a drunken hen night and only realize you have it after sobering up the following morning and looking in the mirror. Regarded as a heretic she’s about to be hung by a gang of religious zealots but using her witch powers and escapes and soon finds those same witch powers are in demand by a duplicitous Queen (Amara Okereke) who wants the power to be a shapeshifter – not in a bid to take over from Gemma Collins chapter of Weightwatchers classes – but instead to reunite with her secret lover whilst the King lies dying in bed.

Alys agrees and hires Boyce (Bautista) a hunter with his arsenal of weapons that had recently included a double headed snake and the pair set off in search of a shapeshifter whilst at the same time having to evade the pursuing gang of zealots that Alys had previously escaped. And off the pair go on their quest through a barren dystopian wasteland of ruined cities not seen since that Dark Tourism episode about Birmingham.

Bautista looks every inch the battle hardened warrior but Millovich is far more subdued in her role. But In the Lost Lands is very much director Paul W A Anderson’s film wholly embracing the action and the monster mayhem with his usual aplomb. All his signatures trademarks are there – the slo-mo shots, the swooping cameras, and the epic landscapes that he has honed so well with his Resident Evil franchise. And there are some eye catching shots – a train careering off the end of a broken bridge into the abyss against an amber sunset, a prisoner in chains silhouetted against a city razed to the ground – are stand out moments.

In the Lost Lands is typically big screen CGI bombast very much aimed at adolescent gamers who should have a blast with a spectacular set pieces though empty narrative.
