Love hits us in the most unexpected way and for Tobias (Andrew Garfield) he is literally knocked off his feet when Almut (Florence Pugh) runs him over in her car. It’s something that our Editor’s wife did accidently too although admittedly her explanation was somewhat undermined when she admitted to reversing back and fore three times before she finally got him. But it’s the start of something better when Almut, as recompense, invites him to her restaurant for a meal where she works as a chef on the rise to culinary stardom and from there love blossoms. It’s spoiling nothing to know that she is diagnosed with advanced cancer and We Live in Time hops back and fore in a deliberately disrupted time line that is part of the films joy allowing the audience to piece together their history.
For Almut the core issue is whether to have six months of pure absolute fun and freedom or to endure 12 months of treatment which might not work anyway. She goes for both – the treatment because she knows Tobias wants her to but at the same time entering a prestigious cooking contest where she will represent the UK and all the stress that comes with that whilst dealing with the debilitating side effects of her chemotherapy.
We Live In Time sits firmly in the tearjerker genre and with two supremely talented leads with Pugh perhaps just edging it and proving once more that she is a radiant screen presence. The films structure might not please everyone who might prefer their weepie narrative more linear than it is here and it does arguably rob you of the big emotional cathartic climatic moment but there’s no doubting the charm, sincerity and often pure joy with Pugh and Garfield’s on screen pairing a reminder that away from their superhero films they are both excellent actors even if the film is playing on your emotions.
