The Six Triple Eight is not the latest estimate of the number of unacknowledged children that Boris Johnson has but instead is the true story of a WWII battalion comprised entirely of black women and the only one that served in Europe during the war.
Led by Major Charity Adams (Kerry Washington) she initially is far from impressed by the duties that her superiors assign her battalion and it’s all exacerbated by the sexism and the very obvious racism of the era. It’s made worse when her battalion are assigned a task she regards as derisory, namely to sort and sift a back log of literally millions of letters for the troops fighting overseas in just a matter of months. But it is new recruit Lean Derriecott ( Ebony Obsidian) who herself has lost her childhood sweetheart in combat , that sees the value and the huge boost in morale it gives the troops.
The Six Triple Eights the latest from one man film industry Tyler Perry who co-writes and directs in the most pedestrian manner. You can see the obvious appeal for what is an overlooked but inspiring piece of wartime history but Perry may be a mover and shaker in the industry with his own studio but this is shot in such vanilla style that it would not look out of place on The Hallmark Channel. The script hardly helps with Washington given a number of intended power speeches which pushes Obsidian to one side when it’s her role that is really the lead. And when the true story of a second world war battalion comprised entirely of black women and the only one that’s served in Europe during the war is then repeated again with end credit post script that tells us that this is the true story of a second world war battalion comprised entirely of black women and the only one that’s served in Europe during the war you can’t help feel that Perry’s own attention was distracted.
Though it’s a largely unknown cast of women they cope with the at times trite dialogue and a lone scene that sees, of course, who else but his mate Oprah Winfrey pop up chatting with the Roosevelt’s it’s a wonder though small mercy that Meghan Markle doesn’t elbow her way into the scene doling out unwanted hugs and gurning for her own photographer that she’s bought onto set. It’s a worthy story that’s not matched by the film that recounts it.
