Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – REVIEW

movie flex

It’s likely that no one was more surprised than Paramount studios  that their film, Sonic the Hedgehog became the third biggest earning Hollywood film of 2020. A further inspection would reveal that as the world went into lockdown shortly after its release it would explain why. Earning $319m a sequel followed which earned over $400m so of course we now have Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic, Knuckles and Tails as a team now find themselves with a new adversary that’s not Dr Robotnik but instead another hedgehog called Shadow that’s escaped cryogenic suspension in Tokyo and embarks on a mission for revenge and is more powerful than Sonic and co can possibly overcome. It sees them form an unlikely alliance with former foe Dr Robotnik, now a lardy slob watching daytime TV.

So what can you say about the latest video game to film adaptation? The animation is on point (the animators have got the detail down to a tee even including bloodshot veins in the character’s eyeballs). The action is manic and as might be expected it is really Jim Carrey’s show stealing every scene in customary style, gurning and grinning  with a moustache so preposterous that its giving Kenneth Branagh’s incarnation as Hercule Poirot a run for his money. The script is as might be expected but there’s a handful of knowing lines in here that are often very funny if you can catch them amongst the manic mayhem which is matched by an eclectic soundtrack that takes in The Prodigy’s anthemic, ‘Firestarter’ ( unbelievably now 28 years old)

Fans of Sonic will undoubtedly love the film, most notably two end credit scenes that will see them lose their minds as to the direction of the inevitable fourth film but ultimately Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an ideal film for a post Christmas trip to the cinema.
