That anything positive comes out of any international meetings of world leaders such as the G7 always remain rumours especially when whatever agreement is rarely adhered to and targets never met. And that’s what happens in writer –director Guy Maddin’s film that starts with the ‘family‘ photo of seven of the World’s leaders at the G7 conference before they all trot off to a gazebo in the grounds of the chateau where the event is being held to cobble together a statement about the undefined crisis the world is apparently facing.
There’s a great cast here headed up by Cate Blanchett as Hilda Orlmann, the Chancellor of Germany and is joined by Denis Menochet as the French PM, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Takehiro Hira as the British and Japanese delegates, Italy’s Antonio Lamorle (Rolando Ravello) and the who better to embody the values of Americana as the US President than Charles Dance? Just about anyone frankly but that’s all part of the joke in Rumours
Much like real life the politicians are all varying degrees of incompetence and self interest in what becomes an increasingly surreal experience that takes in zombies, a giant glowing brain and a bizarre cameo from Alicia Vikander spouting gibberish. And when they find that they have been abandoned by staff and their phones no longer work they are left to fend for themselves as the world’s end seemingly closes in on them.
Rumours is a strange and often baffling film taking pot shots at world politicians – some which hit, some which miss but all of which are never really laugh out loud funny. Perhaps best is an extended joke about an AI chatbot programmes to ensnare paedophiles that goes awry. But ultimately Rumours is overlong and plays like an experimental theatre piece except with a decent cast.
