Latest from the UK’s very own martial arts master of mayhem Scott Adkins, is ‘Take Cover’ an all too familiar military order when an incoming danger to life is spotted and its now an order issued by the head of staff when, after yet another disastrous PR trip, Meghan Markle returns home.
Adkins is Sam Lorde, a crack shot sniper working for a shady company and currently atop a building with his buddie and target spotter Ken (Jack Parr) as they await their latest mark for elimination and banter away about whether there’s life after death, a debate never engaged in by anyone who’s moved to Hull who will always tell you that there’s not even life before death for the residents there. But when their mark, a wealthy gangster , finally arrives along with his classless escort girlfriend the hit goes slightly awry and the pair find themselves making a run for it. It’s a well worn set piece with scant credibility when their targets bodyguards all point their guns in all directions rather than piling on top of their boss to protect him and appear to work for the same security firm that the 6ft+ Donald Trump used to hire 4’6’’ women who couldn’t even find their own holsters when his assassination attempt took place. And for an experienced sniper duo Sam & Ken appear to have no safely planned exit route.
But its their handler, Tamara (Alice Eve) a disembodied voice over the phone who arranges a safe house for them to stay low after what Sam regarded to be his last job. But its not a low key anonymous house in the middle of nowhere but of course a flashy 5 star hotel penthouse suite where the concierge seems a little too eager for the curtains to stay open purportedly to allow them to enjoy the view of the city. What it actually means is that the snipers in an opposite tower block have a clear shot of them which is scuppered when Sam insists the curtains are drawn and when two pretty female masseurs turn up as a gift from Tamara its highly unlikely that Sam or Ken will have a happy ending when the bullets starts to fly.
And fly those bullets do to stunning effect with a sound mix that makes those bullets almost a character in themselves as the pair along with the two unwitting women find themselves having to take cover whilst at the same time the hotel concierge returns for a punch up with Sam as the bullets strafe across the penthouse. It’s a nicely orchestrated set piece by director Nick McKinless himself a former stuntman with credits for films as varied as Fast X, Justice League, Kingsman, Alien Covenant and many more.,
Like many of the best low budget concepts this limits itself to mostly one set, the penthouse which gets left in such a state that the mini bar bill would be the least of their concerns and Take Cover is ultimately a set of ever escalating set pieces of man v man, man v snipers, man v whole team of rampaging tooled up mercenaries with several highly enjoyable scenes with one set in a lift particularly good.
As a jocular sidekick Ken is something of an irritant and casting Alice Eve only to film the back of her head for 90% of her scenes seems a waste though understandable if it had been low rent talent vacuum Gemma Collins. But as ever this is Adkins film and proves yet again that he is quite brilliantly adept as a man of action and despite starring opposite so many bigger name action stars and often burning an indelible mark on screen – his role as the fat martial arts gangster in John Wick 4 being one of his best. he really deserves a break out role that would catapult him rightly into the A list of action stars.
Thought the plot twist can be see a mile off Take Cover admirably demonstrates yet again Scott Asdkins action star credentials are beyond reproach and far above many of his contemporaries.
