With a background in special effects and having helmed a handful of short films Chris Nash finally gives us his debut feature film, In A Violent Nature. It’s a suitably apt title because the kills on screen are something to behold and after a brief theatrical run In a Violent Nature blu-ray is now on release.
The film centres on when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hell bent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back – along with anyone in his way. What follows is a new horror hero methodically pacing through the woods looking for the teens and then just as methodically butcher them in the most gruesome ways that it is almost a homage to those infamous video nasties of the early 1980s none more so than the notorious ‘pretzel’ kill. And yet despite the, at times, extraordinarily gruesome carnage this is one of the best horror films of the year and can now be ….well, we use the word, ‘enjoyed’ advisedly.
Its a film that almost didn’t make it when the actor who played Johnny succumbed to illness a couple of weeks into the shoot. But though the film is full of shocking brutality the disc itself is disappointingly empty containing only the film, the settings menu and that’s it. Not even a trailer. It’s a disc crying out for Nash’s commentary and a featurette on the prosthetic effects. Aside from the years other great horror film, ‘Longlegs’ , Nash and the monstrous Johnny stand out above most of the years horror films and we’re first in the queue for a sequel.
