A Quiet Place landed on ours screens in 2018, a moderately budgeted sci- fi horror thriller with a great premise – monsters land on earth and hunt down the population via their hyper sensitive hearing – that the film quickly gained excellent word of mouth earning a huge $340m, off a tiny $17m budget. A sequel followed in 2020 just as the worldwide pandemic shut down cinemas – we still have our ticket invite to a screening that was to be just days before the UK went into lockdown. But the sequel would launch the reopening of cinemas the following year to eager audiences rewarding it with £297m. So now we have ‘A Quiet Place : Day One’ – the inevitable prequel that takes us back to the moment that aliens crash land on Earth, specifically New York where Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) resides at a hospice with her terminal illness and is taken on a day out to the city where she wants to treat herself to maybe her last meal, a pizza, that is until the aliens crash land on Manhattan and chaos and carnage ensues as she struggles to stay alive with her pet cat that she takes everywhere.
This third film was different in that it moved away from the first two films that had centred on Evelyn Abbott and her children and focussed instead on a different unrelated character who was facing death regardless. But writer –director Michael Sarnoski who takes over the reins from John Krasinski ( he wanted to concentrate on his pet project, ’If’) and gave this third entry a moving climatic moment akin to the first film.
Now released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray & DVD the release has a number of bonus features that includes:
- Day Zero: Beginnings and Endings—Hear from John Krasinski, cast, and crew as director Michael Sarnoski takes the reins for this character-driven prequel. ***
- In the City: Chaos in Chinatown—See how the production crew recreated Manhattan from scratch in order to destroy it. Plus, hear from some new and familiar faces from the franchise.
- The Exodus: Against the Tide—Go behind-the-scenes of the exodus sequence that employed over a hundred extras and a clever mix of practical and visual effects. ***
- The Long Walk: Monsters in Midtown—Meet Frodo the cat and the animal trainers behind the fantastic feline performance. Plus, filmmakers detail Sam, Eric, and Frodo’s long walk through the city. ***
- Pizza at the End of the World—Hear from cast and crew about why a quest for pizza when the world is under attack poignantly speaks to our humanity.
- Deleted and Extended Scenes ***
These are all very much of the EPK variety of featurettes and these are snippets of interesting facts – did you know the film was shot in London docklands and studio? And there’s glimpses of behind the scenes clips that reveals just how much blue screen was used and the two cats that were trained to do a variety of work most notably getting the notoriously water resistant pets into and onto water heavy set pieces. There are also three extended scenes plus two deleted scenes – one set in a shoe shop that adds little and another extended sensitive scene between Nyong’o & Joseph Quinn which is quite touching but would seem to have been cut as it would have dramatically slowed the pace of the film down. What the disc does miss is a directors commentary with Sarnoski and his star the4 always great Lupita Nyong’o.
A Quiet Place: Day One is a decent addition to the series and in the tradition of nearly every franchise apart from John Wick this third film earned less than its predecessors with a slightly lower $261m box office haul – still enough to prompt a fourth film. So while the bonus features of the disc release are standard the film itself adds to the franchise and possibly a fourth will see its universe expand to give an insight into the monsters origin and a rationale for invading.
