Director Luc Besson has a varied and back catalogue of films that has taken in big budget blockbusters such as The Fifth Element and Valerian to art house fare (The Big Blue) as well as franchise films (Taxi, Arthur). Perhaps his most beloved film is Leon Or The Professional as it was titled in the US. The story of a hit man who reluctantly takes in a 12 year old girl after her family is murdered was a big critical success with a very European take on its New York setting. It made an international star of Jean Reno who went on to appear in the first Mission Impossible, Godzilla (1998) and The Da Vinci Code. The film was the first of several he would make with Gary Oldman too.
Made in 1994 the film remains a firm favourite and yet despite the way the film ended fans always want to know, ‘Will there be a Leon 2?’
The original film made only £20m worldwide but continues to perform well on Home Entertainment finding new audiences. There’s also a Directors Cut which includes a couple of scenes that the US were unlikely to pass notably one where Natalie Portman’s character tells Leon she wants to have a baby plus another scene where, having trained her, Leon takes her on a hit in what is an enjoyable sequence – if you’ve never seen the Directors Cut it is well worth seeking out,
The director is currently working on his version of Dracula with Christoph Waltz but whilst we wait for that we had the opportunity to ask him about a possible Leon 2 sequel and here is what he said…..
