Though George Romero’s original zombie trilogy Night, Dawn and Day of the Living Dead remain the standard there have been a number of similarly themed films that flesh out the genre in admirable style. And it is South Korea who unexpectedly added to the genre with the excellent Train to Busan and its standalone sequel Peninsula.
Train to Busan sees a mysterious viral outbreak that pushes Korea into a state of emergency. The government declares martial law just as divorced Seok-woo and his daughter catch the KTX bullet train from Seoul to Busan to see her mother. But someone on the journey has been recently infected, sending the hurtling carriages into complete chaos. As the living dead transform the voyage into a nightmare excursion, father and daughter and a small group of uninfected passengers must fight for survival. Read our review HERE
The film was one of a number of thrillers that goes all the way back to Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes to brad Pitt’s actioner, Buller Tarin’ solely set onboard a train that used the claustrophobic setting well with passengers doing their best to survive. The film performed brilliantly worldwide taking $92m almost unheard of for a subtitled foreign horror film but it wholly deserved its success
This 4K UHD captures the carnage well but the disc disappoints with its bonus features with only a ‘making of’ and a ‘trailer’.
Four years after the success of the 2016 film a standalone sequel ‘Peninsula’ also set four years later saw South Korea’s total decimation in Train to Busan and acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho bought us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok (Gang Dong-won), a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation on the quarantined peninsula with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the most dire of circumstances. Leaving the constraints of the train carriages the sequel opened out into the derelict cityscapes losing some of the tension that made the first film so compelling but despite the film only earning $42m worldwide there’s still much to enjoy with several decent set pieces. The pair of films are a worthy addition to the zombie genre and deserved the acclaim lauded on them on their release and for genre fans they are a must.
