So 2023 was not a great year for Disney with Indiana Jones 5 underperforming and the Marvel films bombing and even before that the Pixar films stalled with Lightyear and Disney Animations Strange World tanking too. But Pixar had a sleeper hit with Elemental that made $496m. Well now the Pixar back catalogue is being revisited with the announcement of a Moana sequel.

Back in 2016 was a big success pulling in $687m worldwide and it received Oscar nominations for best animated feature and best song for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “How Far I’ll Go.” It success has led to a live action remake of the film with Dwayne Johnson who voiced his character in the animated version. The Moana sequel will arrive in cinemas on 27th November 2024 and we should be seeing a first trailer over the coming months. Dave Derrick Jr., who worked on the original film as a story board artist, will direct the new sequel.

Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed the Moana sequel was initially developed as a TV series, before becoming a movie. “We were impressed by what we saw, and knew it deserved a theatrical release,”  He added that the film crossed 1 billion minutes of viewing on Disney+ in 2023, underscoring its continued cultural cachet.

The original Moana voice starred Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, a young woman who goes on an adventure against the wishes of her father, the chief of the Polynesian island of Motunui. Along the way, she teams up with Maui, a demigod of the wind and sea voiced by Dwayne Johnson. Johnson and Cravalho are expected to reprise their roles in the Moana sequel
