With Barbie making an astonishing $356m internationally in one weekend and to critical acclaim there is Barbie Oscar nomination talk. But whilst Ryan Gosling would seem to be a front runner for an acting nom and Greta Gerwig for a possible directing nom there’s a a quandry as to whether the studio should push for an original screenplay or an adapted screenplay?
From the start of the film a title card states, ‘Based on ‘Barbie’ by Mattel’ and there have been multiple CGI films and TV series featuring the fashion doll which would indicate an ‘adapted’ nom. However in 1995’s Toy Story a number of known toys including Barbie appeared in the film which earned an original screenplay nom. And since then The Lego Movie was touted for an original screenplay nom although ultimately it didn’t get shortlisted for that category.
Historically comedies have a better track record in original screenplay, with past winners such as “Annie Hall,” “Juno” and “Little Miss Sunshine.” being some of the best and most memorable. Whereas in the adapted screenplay category its likely to be up against serious heavyweight films that might include Oppenheimer , Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, and Jonatahn Glazers much anticipate ‘The Zone of Interest’ based on the late Martin Amis novel. That said two possible contenders The Color Purple and Dune Part Two are looking likely to move their release dates due to the SAG – WGA strike making the possibility of a win easier for Barbie if nominated.
The 2024 Oscars are on 10th March 2024 and once we are in September the Venice and Toronto film festival where Michael Mann’s new film ‘Ferrari’, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro and Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things have also been widely tipped and will give us a hint at where those nominations might start landing and whether Barbie Oscar nomination talk will continue.
