There have been many films remade that are far better than the original and amongst those we’d include The Thing, The Fly, Dune, Ocean’s Eleven and Casino Royale. However there are some film that should be left well alone as the original was perfect and leading the list if pointless remakes was Gus Van Sant’s Psycho , one of Hitchcock’s most popular films. But it seems that rather than remake one of Hitchcock’s lesser films its seems that Robert Downey Jr is remaking Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Quite why he’s doing that is a mystery and in a recent interview with The New York Times he was asked exactly that. His answer makes a certain degree of sense even if the end product could fall far short of the brilliance of Hitchcock’s 1958 film. It all seems to be related to Downey’s love of rock climbing and when asked why he is raking the film he replied,
“We are certainly looking into it. You know why? God bless. I’ll tell you why. I have been rock climbing before and gotten stuck in that panic freeze, and if not for the sheer embarrassment, I would have asked to have been hoisted off that rock. I lost my confidence in my positioning, the drop was too far, and my body reacted. It wasn’t fight-or-flight; it was freeze-and-about-to-faint.
I’ll never forget it, and it made me think there are cinematic devices that have yet to be fully utilized that I think would provide an experience in trying to say, ‘What does it feel like to be psychologically silly with fear over something that should be manageable?’ That might be entertaining.”
…..and that’s why Robert Downey Jr is remaking Hitchcock’s Vertigo!
