Verity – REVIEW

movie flex

2026 has been a very busy year for Anne Hathaway which has already seen her star in drama ‘Mother Mary’, the comedy ‘The Devil wears Prada 2’, epic blockbuster ‘The Odyssey’, monster movie ‘The End of Oak Street’ and now the thriller, Verity.

Who is Verity?

Based on the unfathomably successful novel of the best-selling author Colleen Hoover this casts Hathaway as Verity Crawford a popular novelist churning out dark racy thrillers from the villain’s point of view. But it‘s Dakota Johnson as improbably named struggling author Lowen Ashleigh to ghost write further novels for Crawford. The huge pay check is a godsend and Verity’s handsome and sensitive husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) is a bonus too. Having signed an NDA she finds that the reason for the job offer is that after a car accident Verity is immobile and borderline catatonic with the sort of slack jawed glassy eyed stared last seen on Brooklyn Beckham’s face when asked what he did for a job.

Allowed to live in Verity and Jeremy’s architectural dream of a lakeside house she begins her research reading through notes and uncovers a manuscript on an USB hidden away in a cigarette packet that is Verity’s confessional owning up to being the sort of mother that Rose West idolises. Bit by bit Lowen uncovers what she has done and why and it soon builds to a final reveal replete with the obligatory thunderstorm and lightening.

Thrilling?

It ticks along all well enough but falls apart in a third act which is chock full of contrivances, illogical actions and procedural inaccuracies and there’s an irony that Verity’s novel is titled ‘Diligence’ as there’ clearly been little carried out in terms of plotting in what is ultimately a potboiler.
