Now in his eighties Michael Douglas has a terrific body of work to look back on as well as two Oscar’s (one as Best Actor in Wall Street and one as producer for Best Film ‘One Flew Over the cuckoo’s nest’) too. He has nothing prove and like so many actors of his generation he’s reached an age where he’s not afraid to speak openly about things which in the past publicists would have advised their clients to not speak about and for that we take out hat off to him. His new memoir ‘One Helluva Ride’ recounts a load of Michael Douglas revelations and stories that were previously rumoured or suspected.

He used cocaine with O.J Simpson! – Though he never used drugs when filming but would be between productions caning coke so heavily that he once fell asleep with a straw in his nose. Ut was in the late 1970s, he says that he did cocaine with O.J. Simpson as they partied with Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner. Douglas explains “I was overwhelmed, [under] a lot of pressure and began to get more involved with cocaine,” …….“I think it was a large part of the failure of my first marriage and going for rehab … I look back on cocaine as a ridiculous, useless drug. But at the time, it was a way to extend partying and to let off steam.”
Whilst drunk he insulted Julia Roberts – This was at the 1990’s Golden Globes where he had been drinking heavily when he saw the actress with her arm around his then 13 year old son and Douglas exploded telling her, ‘“Take your hands off my son and take that Golden Globe and stick it where the sun don’t shine.” The following week he apologized and sent flowers to Roberts and her then-fiancé Kiefer Sutherland saying “I remained friends with Kiefer,” …. “Julia, not so much.”
He slept with his Basic Instinct co-star – Now first up despite the film’s steamy scenes it was not Sharon Stone but instead supporting actress Jeanne Tripplehorn (who was nearly 20 years his junior). At the time Douglas was married to Diandra Luker though it was coming to end. About Tripplehorn he expalined, “I was crazy about her. But I was also just self-aware enough to know that the worst thing I could do at that moment after nearly 20 years of marriage was jump right into another serious relationship. My relationship with Jeanne lasted through production, then we went our separate ways.”
He had a secret affair with Kathleen Turner that was kept s secret for 40 years: 1984’s Romancing the Stone, was his and Turner’s versions of Indiana Jones and the film led to rumors the two were lovers in real life and would would sneak into each other’s hotel rooms while filming with director Robert Zemeckis and co-star Danny DeVito oblivious to what was going on. Douglas described his marriage to Luker ‘as still technically married, but separated’ which was not quite how Luker saw their marriage at that point. It came to a swift end when Luker confronted Turner about the affair on the set. Ut remained unknown to the public with Douglas explaining, ‘The official story went as follows: Yes, we confessed, we had amazing chemistry. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen said, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us … It was a lie meant to protect my wife and son, a lie we told the world for 40 years’
Douglas has been married to Catherine Zeta Jones since 2000
