Tad and the Magic Lamp – REVIEW

movie flex

Starting back in 2012 the franchise now has a fourth film, Tad and the Magic Lamp,  and it’s the first film that dropped ‘the explorer’ moniker presuming that we’re all au fait with the Indiana Jones-lite character which is….ahem …. a tad presumptuous . This new adventure sees Tad with a family and entourage that has now expanded to include not just his wife Sara but their new born baby, Jeff their dog and Belzon the parrot who now talks and a multi-tasking robot as well as Egyptian Mummy Momia and Ramona. Not quite so much an explorer Tad is now a devoted husband and father but it’s the introduction of the fabled magic lamp whose backstory is recounted in a flashback that starts the film and takes in Sinbad and Ali Baba’s involvement in keeping the lamp’s location secret but when it is uncovered they find others are after it too. So when a wish granting genie enters the mix and sends them all back in time, off we go on a lively adventure with Tad et al.

As with the previous films this new adventure moves along at a pace that never slacks and there are a handful of decent jokes and a number of references that takes in Back to the Future and its plot device of the family in a photo fading away and in danger of disappearing from Tads life forever),  a famous line from Some Like it Hot and even a nod to Mad Max amongst several others.

Tad and the Magic Lamp is one of the better films in the franchise bit it is waylaid by the same issue that beleaguered the Lethal Weapon series where the films expanded to accommodate a burgeoning and unnecessary ensemble which includes the obligatory cute animals and the comedy sidekick, the increasingly irritating Momia who is joined by a largely redundant Ramona and Tad’s wife Sara has little to do except come along for the ride. But for the kids that this is really aimed at there’s enough frenetic activity that keeps the plot moving along at a apace that will keep the younger audiences engaged
