Nicolas Cage has had a load of wildly differing films in what is an extensive back catalogue of films. But back in 1995 he was nominated and won his first and to date only Oscar as Best Actor for Leaving Las Vegas
The film saw him cast as Ben Sanderson, a Hollywood screenwriter who lost everything because of his alcoholism and arrives in Las Vegas to drink himself to death. There, he meets and forms an uneasy friendship and non-interference pact with prostitute Sera (Elizabeth Shue).
Based on the book by John O’Brien Leaving Las Vegas co-starred Elizabeth Shue who was nominated for Best Actress and the film was written and directed by Mike Figgis who was also Oscar nominated and here it was for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director. The film is an often harrowing depiction of the underside of life with some grim scenes for both actors.
We had the opportunity to chat with Mike Figgis about all aspects of the film that included having to rein in Cage’s performance which became heated, Shue’s research with sex workers, unexpected cameos and of course the night of the Oscars and who should really have won
