Released thirteen years ago World War Z starring Brad Pitt made a healthy $540m and a sequel was rumoured and almost happened back in 2023 with David Fincher helming but with The Last of Us being very similar in tone combined with the fact that the studio would not fund it even though the budget was less than the first film. Since then a finished script has been collecting dust and J.A. Bayona (Society of the Snow) was also attached to direct before he too dropped out of the project. But it seems that World War Z 2 us back on!
Brad Pitt is set to return as the star and helming the film now is Edward Berger who had huge success with the Oscar nominated ‘Conclave’. Attached to pen the sequel is Dennis Kelly, the mind behind the cult-favorite British thriller series Utopia, which ran on Channel 4 for two seasons and had a dangerous flu outbreak at the center of it. Berger and Pitt teamed before for A24’s upcoming The Riders.
Berger has a gift for making large-scale war epics (All Quiet on the Western Front) and surreal psychological dramas that use cityscapes as puzzles (A Ballad of a Small Player), making him well suited for whatever direction he takes the World War Z sequel.
With the huge success of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot (the film made over $100m on its opening weekend) it would seem assured that World War Z 2 will now get the green light as well as the budget it needs.
