We are big fans of writer-director Robert Eggers whose films are singularly his in style and his latest is Werwulf and we get a first look at what to expect with the first trailer for the film. Described as a a tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within it’s a synopsis that could equally describe any documentary about Meghan and Harry
The first footage was shown at comic-con back in April and was described as terrifying with a cast that includes his favoured regulars Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor Johnson and our very own Ralph Ineson.
Behind the Werwulf….
Once again its a period film with Robert Eggers’ explaining that the dialogue in the film is all 1300s Middle English. He worked with two Oxford professors on the dialogue, which is Middle English and then worked with a dialect coach on a way to temper the pronunciation.
In a conversation with Esquire, Robert Eggers outlined his research-driven rationale directly. “The cool thing about going back into the past is that you can kind of hit a reset button,” he explained. “So all the clichés of being bitten by a werewolf and silver bullets and a lot of the stuff that has become almost campy doesn’t exist in the mythology of this movie. I learned that basically because of protections for the wool trade, there was a big effort to get rid of all the wolves in England. It was pretty successful. So the movie takes place around 1300, and that’s as late as it could be because once there were no wolves in England, there was no more werewolf lore in England.”
Werwulf is released in the US on Christmas day and in the UK on 1st January 2027 which were the same release dates as his last film, ‘Nosfertu’
