Released in 1999 Stanley Kubrick’s last film was, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ starring Tom Cruise and his then wife Nicole Kidman that saw theme as an on screen husband and wife.
After his wife, Alice (Kidman), tells him about her sexual fantasies, William Harford (Cruise) sets out for a night of sexual adventure. After several less than successful encounters, he meets an old friend, Nick Nightingale–now a musician–who tells him of strange sex parties where he is required to play the piano blindfolded. All the men at the party are costumed and wear masks while the women are all young and beautiful. Harford manages to find an appropriate costume and heads out to the party. Once there, however, he is warned by someone who recognizes him, despite the mask, that he is in great danger. He manages to extricate himself, but the threats prove to be quite real and sinister.
The film garnered mixed reviews although decent box office for Kubrick and generally is not regarded in the same with the same esteem as his other films in Kubrick’s back catalogue such as, ‘2001 : A Space Odyssey’. But one of the many rumours about the film involved the casting of Harvey Keitel and just why he left the production. We had the privilege to chat to Kubrick’s assistant the late Leon Vitali about a whole host of things about the director and his films as he had worked with the director since 1975’s ‘Barry Lyndon’ in which he also starred.
