1993’s ‘Cliffhanger’ was an enormous success for Stallone and put his career back on track as an action hero after woeful comedies such as ‘Stop or my Mom will shoot?. Well inevitably the film was up for a remake but with the film having been shot back in summer 2024 what’s happened to the Cliffhanger reboot?
The original Cliffhanger reboot ….
Stallone was set to star in what was described as a legacy-sequel only for him and director Ric Roman Waugh to exit only a matter of weeks before production began over what was the ubiquitous “creative differences”.
The script was rewritten and director Jaume Collett-Sera took over helming duties casting Lily James and Pierce Brosnan in lead roles. The film would see James staying with her father Ray Cooper (Brosnan), an experienced mountaineer who runs a luxury chalet in the Dolomites’ James and her on screen sister join for a weekend excursion with the son of a billionaire. Bur when the group is ambushed by a gang of kidnappers, James character witnesses the attack and narrowly escapes. Forced to go into hiding, she must summon her courage to save Sydney and her father before it is too late.
What happened…
Costing $100 million the “Cliffhanger” was due for release in Summer 2025 but was postponed when original distributor Row K was revealed to be in serious financial issues that meant several films of theirs became stuck in limbo the and their remake was its biggest title. It had been independently financed through international pre-sales and private investment and it was distributor NEON who picked it up for $12 million along with a $20 million P&A commitment with NEON hoping it’ll be a big breakout success.
The Cliffhanger reboot now appears to have found a release date reportedly 24th February 2027 wide theatrical release in the United States.
