Way back in 2001 we had Super Troopers from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. A rag bag of jokes that generally endeared itself to an audience that saw the film make a $23m off a £3m budget. A belated sequel followed in 2018 and in the tradition of ever diminishing returns we now hit a nadir with Super Troopers 3.
What to expect from Super Troopers 3 …
This third film sees the Vermont police troopers tasked to solve the mystery of is sabotaged Maple Syrup trucks arriving from Canada that continues with the teams gentle jibes at Canada. But it is the loosest of plots threads that plays second fiddle to the central story of the lead up to the wedding of thick headed trooper Farva (Kevin Hefferman) marrying the sister of Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar who also directs and could get work as Daley Thompson’s look-a-like). Appalled that his sister is going to marry his brash colleague Thorny determines to get their father to prohibit his daughter from marrying him. There’s ample opportunity to give Farva enough rope to hang to ruin it – whether it be a costume fitting. Meeting the parents for the first time or most obviously a stag night that’s as boorish as might be expected except. But comedy wise this is about as far removed from The Hangover as might be possible with weak slapstick and unedifying racial jibes from Farva with a particular low point seeing him force feed steak to Thorny’s Hindu father.
To see or not to see?
The jokes are lamentable and laugh free and whilst Brian Cox returns as a retired police captain you’ve got to wonder just why he is in this for a third time. There’s been a dearth of comedies over the past ten years or more and comedy trilogies are about as rare as a watchable Meghan and Harry Netflix show and even the original Naked Gun trilogy was struggling by its third film. Super Troopers struggles from the very moment it starts and but still manages to go further downhill as the film progresses and the threat of a fourth film that’s hinted at by the end is surely wishful thinking on Broken Lizard’s part. Terrible!
