It seems that everyone wants to be a film director. That was certainly the dream of Anthony Frith who having been to film school made a few short films, a TV series and then found himself making corporate videos. Every effort to make a feature had borne no fruit and in a bid to make a feature film he contacted low rent schlockmeisters The Asylum accompany that specialized in super low budget matched by super quick shoots that always turned a profit. Best known for their breakout film franchise the enjoyably ludicrous ‘Sharknado’ they took up Frith’s offer to direct. His dream was about to become a nightmare as his own documentary Mockbuster recounts.
The horror of a Mockbuster….
Documentaries about the turmoil of making a film have proved as good as the film itself – Heart if darkness about the making of Apocalypse Now remains one of the very best and on this occasion the making of documentary is better than the film itself no hard task when here the film is about CGI generated dinosaurs that have all the credibility of a business plan written by Meghan Markle.
‘You’ve got to suffer for your art’ was never more true than here. A blockbuster often takes 5-6 months to shoot, Frith was given 6 days. It’s exacerbated further when there’s no script. It’s gets even worse when he has to get a crew and his first producer quickly bows out and his cinematographer is reluctantly agrees only to quickly regret it. The time shooting schedule is not helped when the first day of shoot is held up waiting for The Asylum to give costume approval. Then a lead actor and the cinematographer have a bust up, then Frith’s fist assistant director gets argumentative. It just goes on and on and on and the end of six days can’t come quick enough for Frith. It’s all brilliantly recounted in his own documentary shot simultaneously as the film he’s also directing.
If ever there was proof of the saying, ‘Be careful what you wish for’ then Mockbuster is it and it’s a very enjoyable watch that proves the case.
