The biggest box office bomb ever?
Each summer we get huge budgeted blockbusters and each summer at least one fails often catastrophically. And there’s always been expensive films that failed failed astonishingly badly going all the way back to 1963’s Cleopatra that almost sunk 20th Century Fox and they spent years trying to balance the books until Star Wars put them firmly back in the black. Well there’s news now of a film that looks likely to be the biggest box office bomb ever.
The film in question is ‘Desert Warrior’ that follows an honorable and mysterious rogue, known as Hanzala, who makes himself an enemy of the Emperor Kisra after he helps a fugitive king and princess in the desert.
What went on behind the scenes….
With Anthony Mackie in the lead role and a cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Sharlto Copley and Aiysha Hart it is not without pedigree. At the helm is Rupert Wyatt whose best known film is 2011’s ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ the prequel in an excellent trilogy before a fourth film was made. But it seems that there was a hint that things were going awry in post production when Wyatt walked away during post-production ( although its believed that he did return).
For a number of reasons Desert Warrior has been six years in the making with a budget that ballooned to $150m stumped up primarily by the Saudi government wanting to get on to film production and that’s not taking into account marketing and promotion. The return on their investment has been disastrous. On its opening weekend the film made a paltry $517,508 worldwide putting it well on track to becoming one of the biggest, if not THE biggest box-office bomb of all time.
