Power Ballad – TRAILER

movie flex

There’s was a time not so long ago that we spent Sunday nights at out local as it had a karaoke night where the  quality of our renditions of various songs was directly proportionate to how much we had had drunk that evening. And we started from a pretty low standard anyway so by last orders it had degenerated to the musical equivalent of a war crime. So the arrival of the Power Ballad trailer bought back memories of our Editor caterwauling Harry Nilsson’s ‘Without You’.

But the film focuses on when Rick (Paul Rudd), a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves – even if it means risking everything he cares about.

Starring Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald (who has co-written the script also), Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor from writer-director John Carney (Sing StreetOnce), Power ballad is listed as a feelgood story about music, self-respect, friendship, and the price of ambition.

The story of copyright cases in both music and films is a frequent one and here it is similar to a real life ongoing legal dispute. The controversy surrounding Robbie Williams’ hit “Angels” (1997) involves Irish songwriter Ray Heffernan, who claims he co-wrote the song in 1996 but just about every artist seems to have these cases.

POWER BALLAD IS IN UK AND IRISH CINEMAS ON 29TH MAY 2026
