With the Ryan Gosling starrer, ‘Project Hail Mary’ opening to a wildly successful box weekend earning over $140m worldwide and endearing Rocky the rock to everyone but what is not widely known is the secret Meryl Streep cameo.
In the film Gosling’s astronaut Dr. Ryland Grace constructs a computer-operated translation system to communicate with Rocky that communicates using musical vibrations from a pre-selected menu of vocal choices. ‘We had people from the crew do voices just to make Ryan laugh and have the characters have something to react to.” said director Chris Miller. His co-director Phil Lord added, ‘We tried to imagine voices that would be preloaded into a text-to-speech kind of translator’. But then the pair thought of getting Meryl Streep as a bit of a wild idea. The films producer Amy Pascal had worked with the actress previously and contacted her about a secret Meryl Streep cameo and found that the actress was completely up for doing an uncredited cameo and ended up performed a load of variations which the three-time Academy Award-winning actress Streep revelled in doing.
Though Rocky is voiced by James Ortiz and was one of the five puppeteers controlling the creature but in certain scenes he’s working with stand-ins which included his two daughters!
