What is Shane Black’s Executioner ?
Now Shane Black has had a life long love for pulp crime fiction that has been a huge influence on his scripts for Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys. So The Executioner novels were ideally suited for him. Written by Don Pendleton the books series that told the macho bullet-blasted adventures of Mark Bolan, a sniper turned one man army fighting against the Mafia, the KGB, terrorists and cyber-criminals, or frankly whoever were the bad guys of his latest book’s era. Well now we are going to get Shane Black’s Executioner.
What Shane Black’s Executioner can call on….
And he won’t be short of source material because Pendleton who wrote many of them soon turned to writers that he hired when he licensed out the books, which at their height were being churned out upwards of two a month and in the end numbered an astonishing 464 books that ran from 1969 to 2020 (Pendleton died in 1995), selling hundreds of millions copies worldwide, spawned spin-off book lines, a magazine and comics.
The history of trying to get it to the big screen….
There have been many attempts to get those books made with Sylvester Stallone playing Bolan as well as Burt Reynolds and Steve McQueen at various points. 2014 saw Bradley Cooper almost cast in a version for Warners but as usual there were issues over the rights.
Shane Black’s Executioner might also see him direct but producing will be Joel Silver who has been behind many of Blacks scripts and also tried to get a version off the books off the ground in the early 1990’s and now has finally got the rights to do so for Sony.
