What’s behind that Pixar sequel news?

With John Lasseter having left as Head of Pixar director Peter Docter took over but the studio’s output, though generally good has had its undoubted peaks and troughs and last years ‘Elio’ earned a disastrously low $154m (even though it is a decent film). In a recent Wall Street Journal profile feature on Doctor it said that, “Current and former employees say one of the biggest reasons is that the conflict-averse Docter encouraged new directors to make autobiographical movies that too many audience members struggled to connect with.” Well now there’s Pixar sequel news that will please its fans of two of its biggest films.

The first of the Pixar sequel news…..

The first is that Monsters Inc will have a third film. The first sequel ”Monsters University,”  outperformed the original with a $743.5 million global tally and in turn the sequels success spawned the series “Monsters at Work,” which ran for two series. Quite who will direct and hat the story will be has been kept under wraps.

And the other sequel?

The other Pixar sequels news is the announcement of The Incredibles 3. Now albeit that was announced at Disney fan confab D23 in August 2024 what is now known is that Brad Bird, who helmed the first two films,  is writing the screenplay and producing but it will be  Elemental filmmaker Peter Sohn who will be directing and it is set for a 2028 release.

And last but not least!

There’s also been announcement of Coco 2  whose original film made $823m at the worldwide box office. The sequel is expected in 2029.

To be fair Pixar is hardly struggling but after Elio unexpectedly bombed the studio is upping the ante for wider appeal films
