Game of Thrones has been a huge success for the streaming channels both critically and commercially and there’s been rumours floating around since way back in 2013 of a big screen version. Well now there is finally confirmed news of a Game of Thrones film….or could that be films?
The background to the Games of Thrones film
What’s been announced is that Warners is officially developing a Game of Thrones film set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world with writer Beau Willimon (Andor, House of Cards) penning the script. It had been hinted at in a feature piece on author George R R Martin that HBO and Warners (film division) had been developing rival films about the rise of King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros with the film being treated as a huge epic film a la Dune with multiple films.
Where the film stands at present…
At the moment Warners commitment is impacted by the buy out by Paramount which look s as those it is to be finalized shortly. Nut with Paramount head honcho David Ellison having been vocal about just how big a fan he is of the series it likely the film will be a priority for him and the studio as well as for the prequels and sequela ts that HBO want to make and are already on the verge of being ready to film with a sequel rumoured to be centred around either Arya Stark or Jon Snow,or even both of them.
The original intention…
Originally the TV series showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had wanted to end the series with three feature films following in the steps of the Lord of the Rings trilogy but HBO baulked at the idea wanting to focus instead on their subscriber business base.
