Denzel Washington IS Hannibal who?
So before any fans of Thomas Harris notorious and for Anthony Hopkins Oscar winning serial killer are up in arms our headline Denzel Washington IS Hannibal refers to the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal the Conqueror. It’s a project that’s been rumoured for several years and will be a film that will reunite the actor once again with director Antoine Fuqua. Added to that will be the terrific cinematographer and three-time Oscar winner Robert Richardson (“JFK,” “Casino,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”).
What we know about Denzel Washington IS Hannibal
Regarded as one of the greatest of military leaders and a master tactician this should be a film of spectacular proportions as his story will include the image of Hannibal astride an elephant as he and his army invaded Rome. Along with his army of Carthaginians they notoriously brutal battles against the Romans that saw them occupy southern Italy for years until he was eventually defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Zama.
Washington and Fuqua will co-produce and the film is expected to detail the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.
The casting controversy…
Washington’s casting was not without controversy which was raised in Hannibal’s home country of Tunisia where a complaint was debated in parliament.
Denzel Washington turns 72 years of age this year and quite how action heavy this will be for the actor is unknown but anything like his Equalizer roles is unknown but with Two Oscars and 8 nominations to his name there is already award rumours for such a role
