Does the Dead Lover trailer stink?
Over the decades there have been a number of gimmicks that have included the obvious (3D) to cinema seats being wired up for mild electric shocks. Well the arrival of the Dead Lover trailer has embraced stink-o-vison that was first used in the late 1960’s (called smell-o-vison or odorama at the time) and was last embraced by trash king director John Waters with his film ‘Polyester’ in 1981.
What the Dead Lover trailer is about…
Dead Lover centres on a lonely gravedigger, who stinks of corpses, but finally meets her dream man – but their romance is cut short when he tragically drowns at sea. Grief-stricken, the gravedigger goes to morbid lengths to resurrect him through madcap scientific experiments, resulting in grave consequences and unlikely love.
How they did it…
Directed and co-written by Grace Glowicki, the film stars Glowicki, Ben Petrie, Leah Doz and Lowen Morrow, each playing multiple parts. The four friends drafted ideas for a film and then acted it out with friends from community theatre. After the script was completed the cast, which were not assigned characters at the time except for Glowicki, rehearsed it over the course of six weeks. The actors were given their characters three weeks before shooting. Shot on 16 mm film using an Arri SR3 and Bolex over 16 days at AstroLabs Studios in Toronto, for less than $350,000. All of the sets were two black box stages that were redecorated for each scene. Glowicki wanted the film to be similar to “DIY, low-budget experimental theater.” Quite whether reviews of the film will include the phrase, ‘It stinks!’ is unknown.
Dead Lover launches in select UK & Irish screens from Friday 20th March 2026 and all screenings will be presented in Stink-O-Vision (scratch ‘n sniff cards).
