Bugonia – REVIEW

For non-believers conspiracy theorists would seem to be easy pickings with their flat earth theories, JFK assassination conspiracies and of course 9/11 . In fact a documentary we ourselves were working on about that fateful day in September 2001 saw us interview a conspiracy theorist about the events that day and in the convention of the format our interviewer presented a few facts to be countered but instead he told us, ‘Oh I see! You’re in on it as well!’ and walked off. Well Bugonia has theorist and beekeeper Teddy (Jesse Plemons) whose conspiracy is triggered by the depletion of his honeybees. And for that he blames a pharmaceutical giant led by queen bee Michelle (Emma Stone). But it’s not just the depletion of bees that Teddy blames her for but also his own gravely ill mother Sandy (Alicia Silverstone) who the company are attempting to cure after she took part in their calamitous drug trial.

Fuelled by his own internet research Teddy, along with his easily led cousin Donny (Aidan Delbis) they orchestrate the kidnap of Michelle in order to uncover their belief that she is an alien life form and demand that she takes them to her mothership and Emperor. It’s such wild eyed nonsense to Michelle that she instantly is dismissive of them then threatens them, before trying diplomacy and ultimately desperately pleading with them. And all the while in the background is the local nice but dim Sheriff, who also happens to be a friend of Teddy too, in his quest to find what happened to the missing CEO.

Bugonia is the latest collaboration between director Yorgos Lanthimos and his muse Emma Stone and she is terrific as always and is matched beat for beat by the equally excellent Jesse Plemons in some increasingly brutish and occasionally shockingly violent scenes. Essentially a remake of Jang Joon-Hwan’s ‘Save the Green Planet!’ it has its share of humour and prompts the question as to just who is the actual monster here. In comparison to his previous films Lanthimos has toned down his usual visuals though there are still striking images with Teddy’s mum depicted in black and white flashbacks  and there’s a third act with stand out and often disturbing moments. For fans of the director and Stone’s collaborations this is another must see….and if you’re wondering what Bugonia is it refers to a myth about  bees emerging from the body of a dead ox.
