So anyone who was a schoolboy in the 1970’s will have memories of that saucy X rated soft porn fest Emmanuelle. Starring Sylvia Kristel in the title role it was the story of the wife of a French diplomat in Bangkok who embarks on what can euphemistically be called, ‘a voyage of self-discovery’. Wat it actually involved was was an episodic series of saucy encounters which in retrospect and with the internet so prevalent and easily accessible filth this 1974 film now has all the sexual frisson of a fish supper. But the film was a huge success financially spawning several ever more lurid sequels and now we have something of a reboot with the first look at the Emmanuelle trailer.
Little seems to have changed with the synopsis stating that this new film follows a woman and the series of erotic fantasies that she entertains. Emmanuelle is in search of a lost pleasure. She flies alone to Hong Kong on a business trip. In this sensual global city, where she initiates numerous encounters, she meets Kei, a man who constantly eludes her. Audrey Diwan’s film, freely adapted from Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel, casts a female gaze on the intimate quest of the woman whose name still evokes one of cinema’s most provocative characters.
Based on the iconic novel by Emmanuelle Arsan, Diwan’s reimagining brings a fresh and modern perspective. Blending sensuality with an empowering narrative of female autonomy and desire, EMMANUELLE redefines the boundaries of contemporary erotic cinema – emotionally charged, exploring intimacy and gender dynamics.
Quite whether this will be the unexpurgated adult breast fest that the original was remains to be seen but from what we can see here it is at least stylishly shot.
