Speak No Evil was a Dutch film released in 2022. Co-written and directed by Christian Tafdrup it followed a Danish family who visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness. And it gets very awkward and unpleasant with the bleakest of bleak endings. It’s a far cry from the 2024 Hollywood version that ends very differently and the Speak No Evil director talks about all that went on behind the scenes.
With Speak No Evil (2022) now released on DVD we had the opportunity to chat with director Christian Tafdrup about the real life incident that prompted the script plus the alternate ending that was dropped in favour of the current and extremely dark one that we see here.
