2024 In Remembrance

As we start a new year we take a look at those actors and directors, movers and shakers that we lost over the past year so here’s 2024 In Remembrance……

January 2024 saw the passing of the director Norman Jewison. The three times Oscar nominee the first of which was for the groundbreaking . ‘In the Heat of the Night’ a racial cop drama with Sidney Poitier at the top of his game. But the director had a dip into many genres including musical (Fiddler on the Roof) and heist drama ( The Thomas Crown Affair). He retired in the early noughties to his ranch in Canada where he made maple syrup. Read his full obituary HERE

May 2024 saw actor Bernard Hill pass away who had appeared in many film including the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But its his breakthrough role as Yosser Hughes in the seminal TV drama The Boys from the Blackstuff which remains one of the most important television dramas ever made.  Read his full obituary HERE

May 2024 also saw the loss of Roger Corman. A producer who gave a start to several of cinemas greatest directors including Scorsese and Coppola. Making films , often exploitation films, on micro budgets he was a one man film factory and his importance in nurturing new talent should not be underestimated. Directors such as Joe Dante and the late Jonathan Demme  were always the first to admit that they were indebted to him. Read his full obituary HERE

It is something of a shock that Donald Sutherland who passed way in June 2024 never won an Oscar when he had such an extensive and wide ranging career but its perhaps its ‘Don’t Look Now’ that remains one of his greatest films. But his back catalogue was impressive with roles in MASH, ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ (1978), Klute and Kelly’s Heroes. Read his obituary HERE

Shelley Duvall will perhaps be forever known as Jack Nicholson’s beleaguered on screen wife in The Shining matched only by her off screen treatment by director Stanley Kubrick. It remains a remarkable performance that clearly affected Duvall who stepped away from acting briefly returning in 2022 for her first film in over twenty years. Read her full obituary  HERE

Director Terry Gilliam recalls working with her on Time Bandits……

James Earl Jones was Darth Vader ….or at least the voice.  His booming resonant tones made him immediately identifiable and became much in demand. A wide range of films followed that included Con the barbarian and even The Naked Gun 33 1/3. Read his full obituary HERE

Dame Maggie Smith was a giant of both theatre and film even in her later years on Downton Abbey she dominated. Her flair for comedy was as great as that for drama and she won an Oscar in 1969 for The prime of Miss Jean Brodie. read her full obituary HERE

Teri Garr, best known for her roles in Young Frankenstein and Close Encounters of the Third Kind demonstrated that she as adept at both comedy and drama and she would gain recognition with a younger audience on TV sitcom friends. Diagnosis of MS in 2002 saw her career slowly draw to a close. Read her full obituary HERE

2024 also saw the passing of Airplane! writer and director (alongside David & Jerry Zucker) Jim Abrahams pass away. Whilst Christmas week saw the loss of actress Olivia Hussey who made a stunning debut in Franco Zeffirelli’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’
