Landing in our inbox is the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer and let’s be honest who thought we’d be saying that? And yet the first two films have been huge successes at the box office earning $319m and $405m respectively
The SAG strike at the end of 2023 held up production when filming took place in the UK where filming took place in Farnham, Surrey and so stand ins for Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were used as reference points as no actors could participate due to the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strike. But once that was over James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Tika Sumpter returned and Ben Schwartz also reprised his role as the voice of the hedgehog. Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington have written the screenplay for this third film and director Jeff Fowler will return once more to helm the project.
The film makers of the prior movies have mentioned playing both “Sonic Adventure 2” and the “Shadow The Hedgehog” solo game for inspiration. The film is also inspired by narrative elements from the Saturday morning animated television series “Sonic the Hedgehog” (1993 – 1994). Following the release of the second film. Jim Carrey announced that he was considering retirement from acting but the producers stated that Carrey’s role as Dr. Robotnik would not be recast if he followed through with his plans, but remained hopeful that he would be willing to continue the role if the script was satisfactory to him. In February 2024, he was confirmed to reprise his role for this film, making it the first time Carrey has starred in more than two films as the same character.
