Moana 2 – REVIEW

movie flex

Pixar’s second sequel this year is Moana 2 which now finds the Polynesian heroine looked up to as a heroine to many of the islanders having saved the day in the first film. But this sequel finds her with a second mission to save the day and rescue the island of Motufetu and its people sunk by the evil god Nalo and in turn reunite her kindred islanders.

She still has a piglet and a squawking boss eyed chicken as the obligatory comedy animal sidekicks but is also joining Moana on her ocean voyage is her tom boyish friend Loto, crotchety farmer Kele and muscle man / artist in residence Moni who idolizes the demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson)  and his living tattoos who also joins them as they embark on their mission via song and dance numbers

That this second film was intended as a TV series says everything as Moana 2 is at best middling Pixar fair especially after the summers hugely engaging Inside Out 2 that has become the years’ biggest earner. The same can’t be said for this lacklustre sequel. The sidekicks are inconsequential and unnecessary, the songs are forgettable and it’s only the fearsome coconut shaped pirates, the kakamora, that catch the eye as they did on the first film and , like the minions in Despicable Me are worthy of their own spin off film. They also share the film’s most impressive scene with a gigantic clam crushing everything that tries to sail between its jaws.

As ever the animation is beautifully rendered with stunning colours and shades and the water is beautifully rendered.  Moana 2 is  innocuous enough but ultimately somewhat generic and uninspired – a disappointment when three directors are credited.
