Ed Jackson was at his rugby playing peak when disaster struck. No, he hadn’t been called up to play for Italy in the 6 Nations. Instead a dive into a swimming pool at a family barbeque saw him misjudge the depth of the pool , hitting his head on the bottom with such force that he suffered such a severe spinal injury that he was immediately paralysed and almost drowned. It was good fortune that his father, a retired doctor, rescued him from drowning keeping him afloat in the pool to support his spine until an ambulance arrived. Even then as he was rushed to a leading surgeon in a Bristol hospital he suffered life ending cardiac arrests but managed to be resuscitated. But that was only the start of his journey back to a type of recovery as documented in The Mountain Within Me.
Inspired by his own autobiography this is a remarkable documentary about his road to recovery after surgery where it was made clear to him that he was likely to be paraplegic for the rest of his life. And yet his determination saw him slowly but surely recover to such a degree that he can now walk again and now climbs mountains which even the able bodied would baulk at doing.
The Mountain Within Me is an inspirational documentary that sees Jackson get back on his own two feet again with the invaluable help and love of his family and fiance now wife to support him. With a sporting background it would have seemed obvious that he would turn his talents to say the special Olympics where so many with have proved themselves as exceptional talents despite any disabilities – although the Saudi Arabian team seems to be comprised of former shoplifters – Jackson has instead turned his attention to helping others in similar circumstances to his own.
Though a little overlong, this could easily have been kept to an hour, his story is one of a can do mentality and a determination to overcome obstacles. It’s a message as relevant to those without the physical hardships he has endured with a message of positivity that isn’t amiss in a world that seems to be tearing itself apart.
