La Bamba remake

‘Ba la la la la Bamba’ goes the opening line of the song of the same name….or at least that is what we think it is and it was the 1987 film of the same names that was a biopic of Mexican singing star Richie Valens that was such a bit hit earning a respectable $54m , made Lou Diamond Phillips a momentary star and garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama. Well now, just shy of 40 years later,  there’s news of a La Bamba remake.

The film paid homage to the early days of rock and the talented young man who crossed borders with his music before a plane crash killed him and fellow musicians Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper when Valens was just 17 and Oscar-nominated writer José Rivera (“The Motorcycle Diaries,” “On the Road”) is attached to pen the script which is rumoured to include new biographical details that have come to light in the years since the original film was released.

Lets hope its better than ‘La Bamba 2: Hell Is a Drag’ released in 2013 and was bad if not worse than any sequel could hope to be set, at it was, 100 years after the death of Ritchie Valens, where Rob Fatal journeys through the underworld and questions the nature of celebrity, religion, identity and his own desires. Awful doesn’t come anywhere near describing it.

The La Bamba remake will be helmed by Sony studios
