So before the Farrelly brothers gross out comedies it was Mel Brooks who challenged comedy taste with a number of great films most notably with ‘Blazing Saddles’, a film that would never get made these days. Well now there’s talk of a belated Spaceballs sequel which enjoyed cult status in its send up of the Star wars films.
Writing, producing and starring will be Josh Gad with Josh Greenbaum directing.Co-writing are Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu) and at present the plot is under wraps. the film will be part of MGM Amazon’s output.
Released in 1987 Spaceballs plot revolved around the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Mel Brooks), who attempt to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, only to be thwarted by the hero Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), his sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). the film made a modest $38m ($105m by todays standards) worldwide and is something of a cult film now,
Mel Brooks is 98 years old on the 26th June 2024 and his role in the Spaceballs sequel will be as producer.
