Ridley Scott to direct Bee Gees biopic

movie flex

Director Ridley Scott has a string of biopics to his name with Napoleon the most recent but he’s not made one about real life pop stars before and news is out that he will next direct a Bee Gees biopic. The Bee Gees had worldwide sales of more than 220 million records, establishing the band as one of the biggest-selling groups of all time. Scott’s Gladiator scribe John Logan will pen the script. Barry Gibb, the only surviving brother, will executive produce the film.

Scott has a link to the legendary group going back quite some years to when he was trying to launch his own career. It was the group’s longtime manager at the time Robert Stigwood,  who had been managing the group since the 1960s and played a big part in their resurgence in the 1970s during the disco era while at the same time getting into the movie producing business. Stigwood had placed Scott on the bizarre medieval film Castle Accident that would star the band’s three brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice. Ultimately and probably fortunately the film never came together but that desire to tell some sort of story with the group remained. 50 years later he bow will get that chance with his Bee Gees biopic

A number of filmmakers have taken a stab at the project over the years, with Lorene Scafaria boarding in late December 2022 after the exit of John Carney.

Paramount got life rights to the Gibb family estate in 2019 as well as rights to the band’s classic songs in a movie that could very well follow the template of the Oscar Best Picture-nominated Bohemian Rhapsody. Maurice Gibb died suddenly in January 2003 at age 53, Barry and Robin retired the group’s name before reforming in 2009. Robin died three years later at 62.

Scott is currently in post on Gladiator 2 for Paramount.
